Music

"Wallpaper" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) — licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. Clipped to a 75-second loop for in-game ambient.

Sound effects

Synthesized procedurally from Web Audio oscillators + envelopes at runtime. No SFX file shipped — each tap, flip, chip-drop, and joker pop is generated in code from a small preset table. Style direction: soft, woody, organic — no 8-bit blips, no game-show buzzes.

Typography

Inter by Rasmus Andersson — licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Variable-axis WOFF2 subset so the entire UI uses one file.

Game engine

Phaser 3 — the HTML5 game framework. MIT-licensed.

Build tooling

Hosting + delivery

Cloudflare Pages serves the static site globally with edge caching.

Card faces

All 52 cards are vector-drawn from a five-color palette using a small primitive system (rank glyph + suit symbol + corner indices). No bitmap card art ships in the bundle — this is part of why the entire game weighs under 1 MB compressed.

Inspiration

Hand Daily is a love letter to Balatro (LocalThunk, 2024) — the modern poker-roguelite — and Wordle (Josh Wardle, 2021, now NYT), which proved that one shared puzzle per day is the most replayable game format ever invented. Hand Daily takes the daily-shared shape from Wordle and the joker-driven scoring from Balatro, builds something new at the intersection.
